Odisara Etihasa (ଓଡିଶାର ଇତିହାସ)
₹160.00SHORT DESCRIPTION:
Odishara itihasa” (History of Odisha) by prarimohan Acharya is a landmark work in Odia historiography, published in 1879 (or 1875, sources vary slightly). it’s significant because it was the first comprehensive history of Odisha written by a native Odia author, at a time when the odia language and identity were facing challenges. The book traces the history of Odisha from ancient times (referencing ”Odra” before the Aryans) through various dynasties like the Guptas, somavamsis (including yayati) Keshari’s patronaga of vaishnavism and shaivism). and the Ganga (Gajapati) period, and up to the British rule. Acharya discusses political conditions, the division of Odisha into Garjat and Mughalbandi, maritime trade, and social aspects. while praised for its perseverance and nationalist spirit in gathering historical facts despit limited sources, the book also has some chronological inaccuracies. Nevertheless, ”Odisara itihasa” played a crucial role in galvanizing Odia nationalism and served as a foundational text for understanding the region’s past. it was initially intended as a textbook for schools, though its publication sparked controversy.
